Keeping our Teens Drug and Alcohol Free

Five Keys to a Fulfilling Summer

While summer offers endless possibilities for our kids, there are ways to help guide their choices for a happy, healthy (and drug-free!) summer vacation.

Five Keys to a Summer of Fun, Connection & Growth:

Explore — Encourage your child to branch out, explore, and do more of what they like to do. They don’t have to go far to find something that interests them. Lake County Summer Guide and 2023 Chicago Events Calendar list many options right in their own backyard.

Engage — Help your child reframe their experiences so they play to their strengths. For example, if they have a summer job (see the article below), discuss aspects of the job that appeal to their interests and highlight their unique skills, such as working with children, interacting with customers, or a self-directed project.

Connect — If your child has a particular passion, there are ways to connect with others who share the same passion. Lake County Forest Preserves has a group for those interested in conservation efforts. Highwood Public Library offers many diverse volunteer opportunities from tutoring ESL learners to helping children learn new skills or hobbies.

Find Meaning — If your child wants to donate their time or raise money for a cause they believe in, Lake County’s charities and non profits is a good place to start. If they want to join an organization or campaign for the summer, Do Something offers dozens of causes. CTAD is also looking for DHS & HPHS teens to provide input on our next awareness campaign.

Accomplish — If your child is goal-driven, help them find a program to develop or improve a skill or hobby while also building their confidence. Are they interested in art? The Art Center Highland Park offers a variety of classes for all ages and abilities.

Enjoy diving in with your child this summer, exploring, engaging, connecting, finding meaning, improving a skill or learning a new hobby. Have fun!
