Making Gratitude Stick Beyond the Holidays

60 Second Conversation Starters about Holiday Gratitude

How do you turn a holiday mindset of gratitude into a habit that continues well into the new year and beyond?

Incorporating a habit of expressing gratitude into your daily routine may be the key to making it stick:

  • Find a Prompt — Attach a new habit to something you do on a daily basis. For instance, when was the last time you gave thanks before a meal? Gave a parent, friend or child a hug when saying goodbye following a get together? Kiss your young child or spouse before going to sleep and saying “I love you”? Gratitude can come in the simplest of actions/habits.
  • Follow your Senses — While walking the dog, washing the dishes, or brushing your teeth, focus on your five senses. Find pleasure in the simple things and appreciation for what your senses reveal.
  • See the Connection — Recognize that gratitude is about connection. It is an emotion that strengthens relationships within ourselves and with others. It reminds us of all the ways that our connections define us.
